5 Essential Tips for the Best Waxing Results

Waxing is one of the most effective methods for temporary hair removal, providing smooth, hair-free skin for weeks. However, the experience and results can vary greatly depending on how you prepare and care for your skin before and after treatment. As a professional with over 25 years of experience in beauty therapy, I'm sharing my top tips to help you achieve the best possible waxing results.

1. Grow Your Hair to the Right Length

For optimal waxing results, hair should be approximately 1/4 inch long (about 6mm). This typically means waiting about 2-3 weeks after shaving. If hair is too short, the wax cannot grip it properly. If it's too long, the waxing process can be more painful.

If you're coming in for your first waxing appointment and your hair is currently longer than recommended, don't worry about trimming it yourself. I can trim it to the appropriate length before beginning the waxing process.

2. Exfoliate (But Not Right Before)

Regular exfoliation helps prevent ingrown hairs by removing dead skin cells that can trap hair beneath the surface. However, timing is crucial:

  • Exfoliate 24-48 hours before your waxing appointment
  • Avoid exfoliating the day of your appointment, as this can sensitise the skin
  • Use a gentle scrub or exfoliating glove with circular motions
  • Resume gentle exfoliation 48 hours after waxing to prevent ingrown hairs

3. Prepare Your Skin Properly

How you prepare your skin on the day of your appointment can significantly impact both comfort and results:

  • Take a warm shower before your appointment to open pores and soften hair follicles
  • Ensure skin is clean and free of oils, lotions, and deodorant
  • If you're concerned about discomfort, take an over-the-counter pain reliever 30 minutes before your appointment
  • Avoid caffeine and alcohol before waxing, as they can increase skin sensitivity
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing to your appointment

4. Follow Proper Post-Wax Care

What you do after waxing is just as important as preparation:

  • Avoid hot baths, saunas, steam rooms, and swimming pools for 24-48 hours
  • Don't apply perfumed products to the waxed area for at least 24 hours
  • Avoid tight clothing that might cause friction and irritation
  • Apply a soothing, alcohol-free lotion or aloe vera gel to calm the skin
  • Stay out of direct sunlight for 24-48 hours, as freshly waxed skin is more susceptible to UV damage

5. Maintain a Regular Waxing Schedule

Consistency is key to achieving the best long-term results from waxing:

  • Schedule appointments every 4-6 weeks, depending on your hair growth cycle
  • Avoid shaving between waxing appointments, as this disrupts the cycle
  • Over time, regular waxing can lead to finer, sparser hair growth
  • Hair grows in different cycles, so it may take 3-4 sessions to achieve optimal results

Following these tips will help ensure you get the smoothest, longest-lasting results from your waxing treatments while minimising discomfort and potential side effects. If you have any questions about waxing or would like to book an appointment, please don't hesitate to contact me.
